Bruce Doery Scholarship

Regrettably, due to a current shortage of funds for this purpose, the Bruce Doery Scholarship will not be offered in 2016. However, it is intended that the scholarship will again be available in the future.

Bruce Doery died in November 2007, and was a treasured and honoured Life Member of the Society. He left a bequest to the Society and an extensive collection of Gilbert and Sullivan scores, books and other memorabilia. The Committee of Management decided that there could be no better way of perpetuating Bruce’s love for G & S, and his enthusiasm for the encouragement of young performers, than by establishing an annual scholarship award in his memory. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to a young singer of no more than 32 years of age who has contributed to the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Victoria.

Congratulations to our 2014 recipient Naomi Absalom

There were five applications for the award this year. The adjudicating panel comprised Alex Scutt, Jenny Caire and Stephanie Gibson.

This award does not focus solely on performance ability, but takes in a number of factors, including potential for improvement and how an applicant will contribute to the performance of Gilbert and Sullivan, whose works were very dear to Bruce Doery’s heart.

There were very strong presentations from both professional and non-professional applicants, some of whom have already received grants from other sources.

Therefore in making their recommendation to the committee, the panel members took into account the level of commitment already given to the Society by Naomi over several years, and her willingness to continue that association for the foreseeable future.

The award money will allow Naomi to have fortnightly singing lessons from a teacher of her choice for a period of one year.
