Eileen

An exciting early 20th Century operetta from a prodigious maestro, Eileen is Victor Herbert’s grand Irish ode to his maternal homeland.

GSOV is thrilled to be producing a fully staged season utilising a boutique instrumental ensemble and a stirring new libretto courtesy of VHRP Live, the premiere US company for the music of Victor Herbert.

Directed by versatile auteur Suzanne Barton, with musical direction from multi-award nominee Kent Ross, this superb production will make its Australian premiere at one of our new performing venues for 2018, The Kel Watson Theatre in Burwood East.

On the eve of Irish revolution, patriot Barry O’Day meets the winsome Eileen in France and falls in love. Torn between passion and duty, his sire land pulls his heart and he leaves, unsure if he’ll ever see her again.

Years later Barry journeys to his home in Sligo Bay ready to lead the rebellion against British occupation with the help of sympathetic English aristocrat, Lady Maude, the current owner of the O’Day lands. Imagine his surprise when Eileen turns out to be Lady Maude’s niece! Love rekindles, but with danger all around will their romance survive?

With captivating characters and a joyful score, Herbert cherished his work on Eileen above all others. A craic-er of a production, be swept away on a grand lyrical adventure.

“Eileen remains highly esteemed by connoisseurs of operetta, and for good reason: It’s a delightful work.” – Classics Today

“Herbert’s score for Eileen is glorious: nostalgic, heroic, cinematic, humorous, and in character. It captures the romantic soul of Herbert and epitomizes the romantic American operetta in its transition from Victor Herbert to Jerome Kern.” – New World Records

Call for Production Teams for 2019 Season

OUR 2019 SEASON

GSOV 2019

Applications are now open for Directors and Music Directors for Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria’s 2019 Season. We are seeking energetic, enthused and engaged creative teams to lead our 2019 productions of WS Gilbert's Engaged, Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus and Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore.

  • ENGAGED - February/March

  • Engaged is a humorous farce with a definite suggestion of the "topsy-turvydom" we expect from the Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas. It pokes fun at the way love is idolised and selfishness is overlooked. Engaged will be produced as a semi-staged production at The Knowe in Sassafras for a strictly limited season of 4 shows in February/March 2019. We are seeking Expressions of Interest for a Director.

  • DIE FLEDERMAUS - July

  • Die Fledermaus, composed by Johann Strauss II to a libretto by Carl Haffner and Richard Genee (after Meilhac and Halevy) is returning to Melbourne after a drought of over ten years. With stunning sets and costumes and elegant dances and staging, Die Fledermaus is a favourite with audiences worldwide - mistaken identities, flirtations at a masked ball, elegant frivolities and confusions of all kinds provide a hilarious vehicle for some of the most captivating music ever written. Die Fledermaus will be performed in English, and produced as a fully staged production with an orchestra at Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre for a strictly limited season of 5 shows from 25th to 28th of July 2019. We are seeking Expressions of Interest for a Musical Director.

  • HMS PINAFORE - October

  • Gilbert & Sullivan’s evergreen comic operetta, HMS Pinafore, delights audiences with its witty libretto and rollicking score. Set on a navy ship in the days when Britain ruled the waves, HMS Pinafore pokes fun at incompetent politicians, society norms and subconscious bias. HMS Pinafore will be produced as a fully staged production at a venue to be advised, for a season of 5 shows during October 2019. We are seeking Expressions of Interest for both a Director and a Musical Director.

We welcome those applying to also detail any digital, promotion and marketing experience they feel might be useful or relevant to assist in ensuring a successful season.

Interested parties should email their CVs and biographies through to: Email Enquiries and Applications to secretary@gilbertandsullivan.org.au
